Past event

Maggi Hambling joins Minories trustee and Artist Jevan Watkins Jones to discuss love, loss, laughter and Nightingales, in the first of a new series of talks based on the Victor Batte-Lay Foundation Art Collection.

Maggi Hambling

Maggi Hambling CBE lives and works in London and Suffolk. Hambling studied with Lett Haines and Cedric Morris, and then at Ipswich, Camberwell and the Slade Schools of Art. Her work is represented in major collections internationally, and in the UK at the British Museum, Tate, Victoria and Albert Museum, National Portrait Gallery and National Gallery. Hambling has established a reputation over the last four decades as one of Britain’s most significant and controversial artists, a singular contemporary force whose work continues to move, seduce and challenge.

Hambling’s exhibition, ‘Maggi Hambling: The Night’ is currently open at Pearl Lam Galleries in Hong Kong.

‘In a period when many artists try to be sexy, and only end up being commercial and competitive, she’s the real thing. For she knows backwards how the core of desire is vulnerability.’ - John Berger

Jevan Watkins Jones

Jevan’s work crosses the fields of drawing and horticulture; his routines as a gardener are bound up in the material of his images. His distinct social practice draws on life’s processes and the seasons of the garden to explore issues faced by individuals and communities.

He is the founder of the Chatto Art Group who meet monthly at Beth Chatto Gardens; an Honorary Associate at Cuckoo Farm Studios and a Trustee of The Minories.

Watkins Jones studied at The Royal Drawing School, receiving the school’s first prize for his drawings from city farms.

There are 5 free in-person and 10 free online-only tickets available. If you would like to attend but cannot afford to purchase a ticket, please send a short email to emma.howe@theminories.org with the subject line 'Maggi Hambling Talk Free Ticket' to apply for a free place.
